Can professional skepticism be learned? Evidence from China

The purpose of the present study was to explore whether professional skepticism can be learned in a classroom setting, an issue that has received scant attention in the prior literature. A questionnaire was administered to students enrolled either in the accounting program or in the business administration program of a large college in China. The author finds that participation in ethics education is positively related to students’ professional skepticism, whereas participation in auditing education is not related to accounting students’ professional skepticism. The author also finds that accounting and nonaccounting business students exhibit no significant difference in their scores of professional skepticism.     

The end of the flat tax experiment in Slovakia: An evaluation using behavioural microsimulation in a dynamic macroeconomic framework

The paper introduces a new way of linking microsimulation models with dynamic general equilibrium frameworks to obtain an evaluation of the impact of detailed tax and benefit measures on the aggregate economy. In the approach presented in this paper, income heterogeneity interacts with the macro-economy via aggregated individual labour supply decisions which influence, and are influenced by, the dynamic evolution of the real wage rate. The method involves a reduced-form representation of the information flow between the macroeconomic and microeconomic blocks. The practical usefulness of the approach is demonstrated by evaluating actual and hypothetical tax reforms that involve abandoning the flat tax system in Slovakia. A hypothetical move to a highly progressive tax structure is shown to generate some employment gains but is associated with a drop in aggregate income and tax revenue.     

基于县统筹财政分权视角下的地方义务教育公平研究 ——来自山东省的实例

由于基层政府长期存在财力事权上的不均衡,我国基层地区义务教育供给存在着差距。2001年的"以县为主"的县统筹财政制度开始实行,义务教育的负责主体变成了县级政府。借助2002年到2016年的山东省县级数据,运用泰尔指数作为分析工具,结合此期间山东省出台的教育改革措施,分析其对于缩小义务教育差异的影响。研究发现,政策制度仅仅改善了中等收入县级地区之间的差距,对于高收入和低收入地区并没有太好的效果,就目标而言,由于县级各地区上经济实力和义务教育规模的固有差距,导致无法取得理想中的效果。     

Returns to women’s education using optimal IV selection

This paper investigates returns to women’s education by applying an optimal IV selection approach, post-Lasso IV estimation, which improves the first-stage predictive relationship between an endogenous regressor and instruments. Using the 2010 American Community Survey, we find that an extra year of education increases married women’s own income by $4,480 and spouse income by $8,822. Our findings indicate that 53% of the increase in women’s consumption by education is attributed to the marriage market, and thus, we conclude that the marriage market is the primary channel through which education improves women’s well-being. The results demonstrate the advantages of the post-Lasso approach: The resulting two-stage least squares estimator maintains efficiency without increasing finite sample bias and is less subject to the inconsistency problem when some instruments are invalid; This differs from the results using the instrument of birth quarters only, which is mostly applied in studies on returns to education.

A comparative study on the effectiveness of English-medium and Turkish-medium accounting education: Gazi University case

The authors explore the effect of medium of instruction on students' attainments at a large state university in Turkey in the Department of Business Administration. The findings indicate no statistically significant difference in grades of 386 students with respect to medium of instruction. As for entry rankings however, those in the English-medium program who had higher scores on the university entrance exam appeared to be more successful. It may be concluded that English-medium instruction is not a disadvantage in attaining learning objectives.
